Ceschi (pronounced chess-key) Ramos makes his own version of progressive hip hop spliced with elements of folk & indie rock. Although he has almost mathy technical rap abilities he's first and foremost a singer-songwriter at heart. Although one Ceschi song may consist of punk influenced machine gun fast raps, the next may be a quiet folk ballad played on acoustic guitar.

Lightning struck, thunder crashed, and TribeOne was born with a smile on his face and a rap in his heart. It took him a few years to figure out how to write and then many more years to figure out how to write a decent rap. But eventually he sorted it all out and his been at it ever since.

Cactus Truck is based in Amsterdam and they've collaborated frequently with members of The Ex, including Terrie Ex, Andy Moor, Arnold de Boer (ZEA) and Colin McLean, as well as Ab Baars, Han Bennink, Dave Rempis, Jeb Bishop, Peter Jacquemyn, Teun Verbruggen, Gerri Jaeger (Knalpot) and Jon Rune Strom. Jordan Igoe & Mackie Boles
~~~ Mason Jar Menagerie ~~~ Hollerin River Talkers ~~~ Noah Brock
Hailing from the Holy City of Charleston, SC,
Jordan Igoe
professes a sound rooted in Southern Americana. The multi-instrumentalist has played and performed in a multitude of different groups around the Southeast. Igoe has been playing professionally for over ten years as a solo performer, and with a rotating lineup of stellar backup musicians around Charleston and regionally around the Southeast. Having grown up in a musical family, Igoe started playing piano at age 10 and picked up the guitar a few years later, and writes catchy, heartfelt songs with both instruments. It is her raw, soulful voice, however, that immediately grabs the listener and holds on.
Mason Jar Menagerie is a blues-rock three piece from Fountain Inn, SC. Comprised of the Garrett siblings, Jake and Susan. Along with their good friend Ameer Raja. Jake leads with rock-n-roll style guitar, vocals and more. Susan keeps the heavy blues beat with the drums and taps on with the clogs and washboard. Ameer plucks at the groove on the bass. If you like The Black Keys and The White Stripes you are sure to love this Appalachin blues- rock trio.
The (Hollerin') River Talkers is a group of singer-songwriters and musicians who have come together to play old blues and gospel tunes.
Still Sweet
~~~ Silent Spring Ensemble
~~~ Doomslang
Still Sweet (formerly Scallion) is the main songwriting and recording project of Edible Onion founder and multi-instrumentalist, Darian Scatton. Darian's music is amorphous and hard to pin down, ever-changing and shifting in color and tone at the whims of its creator. The recordings are usually comprised of sounds created with whatever instruments happen to be lying around at the time, giving the recordings an odd sense of time and place as well as the sense of wonderment that comes from happy accidents and the chaos of home recording. For now, Darian performs alone with just his voice and his harp, paring down his densely arranged recordings to their emotional root, displaying them openly with beautiful sadness.
Silent Spring Ensemble: "... the delicate beauty of intricate finger-picked electric guitar patterns, gracefully gliding cello melodies and the stately shuffle of drums. Minimal like Rachel's and elegiac like Songs for a Dead Pilot-era Low, Silent Spring Ensemble's slowcore is nonetheless uniquely beautiful." - P. Wall
Doomslang is Joshua McCormack from Columbia, SC. That is all.
Mechanical River is Charleston, SC's Joel T. Hamilton, who released 2010's Feels Like We're Going To Win on Shrimp Records, the label he formed with Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst (Shovels & Rope) to support local Charleston artists. Most recently, Joel has become Mechanical River with the release of Astral Castle, a haunting set of deconstructed R&B-folk jams featuring looped vocals, keyboards, and a cigar-box guitar.
Water Liars: "Pissed energy packed with solemn depression, leaning on the sides of agression and beautiful compassion and brokenness to an effect that makes all of the force feel and sound wonderfully wounded." - Daytrotter
Outdoor Protestant Blues Band: When Mike Collins isn't shouting garagy bluegrass with Say Brother, he's been known to pound away at fuzzed out blues under the moniker Outdoor-Protestant Blues Band. He's a one man hurricane.
You Call This An Election?
This month the SC Progressive Network fourth-Tuesday movie night moves to an after-work networking night. We are mixing socializing with a guest speaker or two, followed by discussion or short film. This month the conversation is: You call this an election? We'll take a look at our system, with the nation's least competitive legislative elections (83% of our 170 legislators faced no major party opposition in the general election), and we'll get a report from our Election Protection coalition on problems at the polls. Were you one of the exemplary citizens who stood in line for six hours to cast a vote? Did you vote for Mr. Obama knowing that the electoral college makes your choice irrelevant? Were you one of the confused voters who called the Election Protection Hotline to report that they left the Democrats off the electronic ballot, when in fact there we no Democratic candidates? Come share your Election Day story. We'll watch a 15-minute documentary Don't Trust the Touchscreens about the very computers we use to vote. Dr. Duncan Buell, a USC computer expert who warned the state Election Commission not to buy these machines, will be on hand to tell us why we need a new voting system and critique the system failures in Richland County. Doors open at 5:30pm; the program begins at 6. For details, call 803-808-3384.
Jeb Bishop & Jorrit Dijkstra
|
Jeb Bishop (trombone, mutes) and Jorrit Dijkstra (alto saxophone, mutes). Free improvisation, but this need not automatically lead to dissonance and chaotic patterns. Often gentle and sublime, thought not afraid to dish out some unmitigated ferocity, this is two pros having a quality conversation with their instruments. Jorrit Dijkstra spent his formative years in Amsterdam's vibrant improvisation community playing jazz, free improvisation, and world music. Since moving to the United States in 2002, Dijkstra has deepened his affinity with the experimental forces of American music, while staying in touch with his Dutch musical roots. Jeb Bishop was born in Raleigh, North Carolina during the Cuban missile crisis. In later years he played trombone and bass with The Flying Luttenbachers, Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Jim O'Rourke, and such.
Jealousy Mountain Duo: "Two-man German band Jealousy Mountain Duo's self-titled longplayer was released by experimental German label Blunoise, a perfect portmanteau of Jealousy Mountain Duo's disparate '60s jazz and noisy, math-rock influences. Jealousy Mountain Duo takes a deconstructivist approach to its experimental blend of post-modern jazz and mathy indie rock, its guitars looping looping and conflicting melodies, its drums working in and out of rhythms, eschewing any semblance of straightforward timekeeping for an abstract counterbalance to the swirl of notes and tones. The result is tightly controlled chaos, a sonic maelstrom where form doesn't necessarily follow function. This, truly, is radical stuff. In both senses of the word."- P. Wall
~~~ Darling Waste
~~~ The Hookup
~~~ Adison Croft

|
Lost in the Middle, a D-I-Y rock band from South Carolina, are looking to gain some more exposure and some industry support.
Darling Waste is a heart felt indie rock band that began in Cleveland, matured in New York City and found it's way to Brighton, England. After seven years, 500 DIY shows in 11 countries, & an incomprehensible number of miles & hours spent wearing out 10 vans, the band has built a fiercely loyal army of devoted fans. The band's working class mentality, dynamic live show, and fan connection have afforded Darling Waste opportunities to play several UK festivals and share the stage with Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Bayside, Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, Saves the Day, Something Corporate, Secondhand Serenade, Aiden, Kill Hannah, and many others.
Adison Croft: in early 2006 Blake Hammer Burel, Nathan Nelson, and David Blevins began writing with singer/songwriter Steven Marner, partly as a way to deal with the frustration over the breakup of their old band, Malaki Kort. It turned out that the heavier sounds and deeper, more thoughtful lyrics Steven brought to the table were just what they were looking for. The roughly twenty songs that they have collaborated on thus far provides an exciting addition to modern rock. Melodic verses leading to hard driving choruses reminds listeners of radio staples such as: Stone Temple Pilots and Breaking Benjamin. However, the quartet is careful not to be formulaic in the songwriting process. With influences from Pink Floyd to Mudvayne, unacquainted listeners are given more than a few reasons for surprise. Their fresh ideas have earned them praise from peers and industry veterans alike.
Brik Cash: acoustic/alternative/pop, catchy lyrics ... sexy as shit, handsome as fuck, awesome as hell, and my names Rod and I like to party.
Frederick Ingram: is one of the Carolinas' most original voices. A performing songwriter, he accompanies wide-ranging vocals with a signature brand of fingerstyle guitar.

The Home of Easy Credit

Queens-based
The Home of Easy Credit
challenges the boundaries of free-improvised music, jazz, folk, and pop music with an iconoclastic approach that defies all those who seek to classify music by genre. Two musicians who met in New York in 2008 and were married one year later, Danish multi-instrumentalist Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen and bassist Tom Blancarte have teamed up musically as The Home of Easy Credit, releasing their self-titled debut album on Northern Spy in 2012. Taking their name from a department store sign in a dilapidated section of downtown Houston, Texas which they photographed while on tour there, the duo seeks to hold up a mirror to contemporary musical tastes to create a dark, beautiful and thrilling sound world that reflects upon the decline of contemporary civilization. Recently gaining notoriety for her improvised solo performances, Jensen uses a broad range of colors, drawn from a long lineage of Scandinavian artists including Jan Garbarek, Arve Henriksen and Bjork but blended with saxophone sounds as diverse as Lee Konitz or Mats Gustafsson. An experienced veteran of the New York DIY music scene, Blancarte, who plays electronic futuristic jazz with the Peter Evans Quintet, hyperactive prog banjo/guitar shred with Seabrook Power Plant and provides hellish bass insanity to tubist Dan Peck's improvised doom metal outfit The Gate, utilizes every trick in his book to underpin his wife's apocalyptic musical narratives. The year 2012 promises to be an exciting year for the duo, as they plan an epic tour of North America in the fall and two tours of Europe in the spring and summer.

| HOME MOVIE DAY |
|
|
|
Members of the community are invited to bring their home movies to an "inspection and projection" event to celebrate Home Movie Day on October 20. The free, family-friendly event begins at 3:30 p.m. at Conundrum Music Hall, located at 626 Meeting Street in West Columbia. Refreshments will be available and prizes will be awarded.
Several area film professionals and aficionados, all volunteering their time, will be on hand to inspect the film and talk to film owners about ways to preserve their home movie. If the movie is in good condition, it will then be projected onto a large screen.
"We need to pay attention to the richness of what film exists in the hands of individuals," said Gypsye Legge, a local film archivist and hostess of the event. "History is kids' birthday parties, your uncle's wedding, the Kennedys' sailboat excursions --- and it's all found on home movies.
USC Libraries' Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC) is a sponsor of the event.
"Home Movie Day is a national event founded by the folks the Center for Home Movies," said Heather Heckman, an associate director at MIRC. "The idea behind it is to promote home movies and make people appreciate them again. Home movies have a lot of historical and aesthcetic value, so we want to bring attention back to this genre. This event offers a chance to actually watch the home movies, to actually project them and watch them in the original way, which is part of the experience of film. It's also a great opportunity for us to get a sense of the home movies out in the community that could be archived here at MIRC."
Lydia Pappas, an associate director at MIRC, has participated in Home Movie Day events in London, England.
"I remember an indie film maker, called Captain Zip, who lived in London in the punk era and who filmed the local music scene," she said. "He and his family brought in a lot of his Super 8 movies one year to Home Movie Day at The Cinema Museum in London that had to do with the punk music scene in London. It was a lot of fun for the audience to see that."
While that probably isn't the type of home movie that will be found in Columbia, there will be plenty to see.
"Home Movie Day at Conundrum will be a casual event where people will bring in their films and volunteers, many of whom are trained professionals, will look at the film," Legge said. "We'll be able to look at virtually any format: Super 8, 8mm, 16mm, VHS and digital formats. Bring your movie on a reel, or in a file, or on a DVD. The contributor will get a valuation of physical condition of their and then we will try to project it on the large screen."
Other event volunteers include MIRC's Stan Lollis, Brittany Braddock and Ashley Blewer.

"Nobody ever paid money to see Harry Houdini escape being buried alive," says
MY JERUSALEM
founder and singer Jeff Klein. "They wanted the small chance of seeing him killed by the weight of the earth on top of him."
MAGNETIC FLOWERS come across as a gloriously overstuffed indie rock force of nature, with its band members trading instruments and vocals with abandon as they deliver their highly original, melodically layered, and hyper-literate songcraft. The influence of groups like Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists and The Hold Steady are evident in the band's sound, but are inadequate in capturing the group's exuberant energy and vocal abandon. What is truly amazing about the group, however, is how often they go from careening rock n' roll to subtly layered vocal harmonies or delicate guitar picking, from garage rock fervor to moments of chamber pop bliss. There seem to be no rules or limits to the band's sound, only a willingness to follow each and every song down the proverbial rabbit hole.
OCTOPUS JONES is Danny Martin (vocals/guitar), Blake Ratliffe (vocals/guitar), Clay Carlisle (bass), Chris Wilson (keys/percussion), and Darrin Cripe (drums). Born and raised in South Carolina, the sound of the east coast emanates through every note.

Hailing from South Carolina,
Jacob Johnson
is a one-of-a-kind solo acoustic performance artist who specializes in a style of guitar playing he calls "Neo-acoustic folk/funk." In live performance, his off-the-cuff sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek sensibility disarm the audience and leave them completely unprepared for the multi-layered guitar masterworks he unleashes. Jacob thumps, taps, and slaps his acoustic guitar into submission, weaving a musical tapestry that usually climbs to sonic frenzy whilst never losing its balance or control. His lyrics, thoughtful and realistic, are delivered with the wry sort of charisma that makes you wonder if he isn't just making it all up as he goes. And sometimes he is.

It's impossible to get even a few seconds into new song "Crazy Fishes" without noting it bursting through her vocals, mixing with a warmth and richness that simultaneously evokes jazz and sixties pop. Add in the twinkling synth, jazz piano lines, and steady drum beats, and you've got yourself one nostalgia trip that you'll so enjoy taking" |

"The Rocketboys showed a mastery of mood and subtlety. Amplifying a sound made familiar to Texas music fans by bands such as Cue and Explosions in the Sky, the six-member group adorns singer Brandon Kinder's soaring melodies with clear, ringing guitars and full-bodied keyboard arrangements, hard-driving drumlines and well-practiced transitions between calm and controlled chaos."

plays an ethereal brand of rock, layering Rosenblatt's Beach Boys-esque coos over shimmering lo-fi keyboards, tribal drums, and anything else lying around the studio. Netherfriends began to make its name in Rosenblatt's hometown of Chicago in 2007, as he gathered a vast network of acquaintances together to create entrancing sounds. While multi-instrumentalist Justin Fernando is a regular collaborator, when Netherfriends tours, it's generally a solo endeavor. After a pair of self-released singles, the act signed to Emergency Umbrella Records, releasing the EP Calling You Out in 2009. The following year, Rosenblatt embarked upon the nomad's life as he pulled up stakes from his Chicago home and took to the road with the plan to play gigs in all 50 states.
Weaving together ephemeral semblances of meaning and vainly groping at values, Senseless Beatings is a musical project(ion) of people with no place to go. In spite of recognizing the vanity of their hopes (being-for-other-that-is-being-for-self), they wander about feverishly writing music that never quite satisfies their desires.
| Stuart/Hennies/Feeney Percussion Trio |
The trio of Tim Feeney, Nick Hennies, and Greg Stuart is dedicated to the exploration of percussion through various non-traditional approaches. | Drawing on their experience performing both improvised and composed works, the group approaches percussion in a way that places the exploration of sound in the foreground rather than a focus on rhythm, gesture, or technique. The trio is in the unusual position of having all its members eschewing their training as "classical" percussionists in favor of a musical approach that is primarily concerned with exploring acoustic phenomena rather than exercising their abilities as virtuosos. | Greg Stuart (Columbia) |

Vox Arcana | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
VOX ARCANA is a new music trio organized by percussionist Tim Daisy, and includes two mainstays from the Chicago improvised music scene: James Falzone on clarinet and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics. The tightly structured compositions are written for the purpose of investigating the dynamic between thematic material and open improvisation, and how these elements can affect the overall shape and character of each composition.

Dylan Dickerson is Dr. Frankenstein and
DEAR BLANCA
is his musical-monster. Given life in 2011 and named after Dickerson's late grandmother, Dear Blanca offers energetic music coupled with folk-songwriting lyrical aesthetics. The band consists of Dickerson's long-time friend and bandmate Marc Coty on drums, Evan Simmons on bass, and a hodge-podge of other talented musicians. Inspired by acts such as the 80's punk group Minutemen and folk-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, Dear Blanca offers an eclectic range of songwriting that is at times noisy and rambunctious and other times mild-mannered and sentimental.
FALLING OFF A BUILDING is a band for the songs of Adam Clayton Cullum, a self-obsessed graphomaniac who keeps learning new words and terms.

~~~ Thighmaster
For the select few that don't know him,
Malcolm Tent
is a local legend [in Connecticut]. He's the brains behind Trash American Style, which was once CT's hottest record shop, and is now CT's hottest mobile record shop. Chances are if you ever set foot in that place, you knew who he was - an instantly recognizable personality that would chat with you for hours about obscure records, old punk bands; really anything at all. His list of accomplishments are pretty staggering: he plays in experimental punk band Ultrabunny, and he plays brash acoustic solo shows. He hosts the fantastic Mr. Tent's Wild Ride radio show on WNHU 88.7 FM. He also features pretty prominently in I Need That Record, a phenomenal documentary by Brendan Toller, which examines the closing of local record stores all over the country, but focuses on New England.
Hauswerk is an all-housewife punk band from Columbia, SC. It is comprised of Songstress Giantess Katherine McCollough screeching the lyrics, Jessica Oliver shredding the power chords, & Brielle Hayes banging on drums with kitchen utensils. You're grounded.
Thighmaster is like young adult fiction, you can get away with a couple of swears now and then.
David Olney with Sergio Webb
~~~ Todd Mathis
David Olney with Sergio Webb"Olney's deep, hard-nosed voice remains as clear and unforgiving as a punch to the face, and, as always, it's his songs of love, with their focus on tenderness and redemption, that do the most lasting damage." ( The Nashville Scene ) Longtime touring and recording artist DAVID OLNEY is well-known for his songwriting and live performances packed with such intensity it leaves listeners with an experience to remember and has other prominent artists jockeying to record his songs. His intelligent compositions have been cut by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, Tim O'Brien, Slaid Cleaves, Dale Ann Bradley, Ann Rabson, Kane/Welch/Kaplin and others.
DAVID OLNEY joined forces on-stage with multi-instrumentalist SERGIO WEBB in 2007 to present a one-of-a-kind show that features classic Vaudevillian moments coupled with musical and lyrical acrobatics. The sartorially splendid duo is always on tour, in the US and overseas. David's first installment of his new series of thematic mini-albums - "David Olney Presents: FILM NOIR" (Deadbeet Records) - earned a spot on the Philadelphia City Paper Top 10 Roots Albums of 2011, citing, "these dark stories and their perfect small jewels of cool jazz must be honored for offering fascinating listening, both lyrically and musically."
His current mini-album - "The Stone" - was released earlier this year and focuses on a fresh telling of the Easter story from varying points of view. A third thematic CD entitled "Robbery &; Murder" is planned for a late 2012 release. Keeping it current and keeping up with fans, David broadcasts every Tuesday on his website with his "You Never Know" video shorts - featuring the story behind a song and it's performance along with other personal observations - in addition to sharing his other music videos and stellar classic poetry recitations ("The Rime of The Ancient Mariner" in seven parts!) on YouTube. "In the tradition of Johnny Cash and Tom Waits, Olney has become A PIONEER OF THE AMERICANA MUSIC SCENE." ( The San Francisco Chronicle)
"This was a ROOTS/AMERICANA DREAM TEAM that spoiled us rotten. RIVETING and UNFORGETTABLE." ( Americana-UK.com ) "Olney stands out LIKE A JALAPENO IN A BOWL OF VANILLA PUDDING." ( Houston Press ) "A PERFORMANCE THAT BORDERS AT TIMES ON THE ORCHESTRAL.... A show PACKED WITH INCIDENT, amusement, contrast and fine, fine songsmithery." Wasted Wine combines Eastern European-inspired melodies, bizarre sounds, classic rock guitar suite-like song structures to create some kind of strange, dark, homemade prog rock.

Thollem Electric's Pursuit of Happiness Thollem has been traveling perpetually throughout North America and Europe these past six years, collaborating with artists from Mike Watt of the Minutemen and John Dieterich of Deerhoof to the late Italian master contrabassist Stefano Scodanibbio. Signal to Noise magazine observes that with "hands like tenpounding steam-pistons" he's a "supercollider centrifuge of innumerable disasters, achurning black caldera bespattered with beautiful madness. It seems beyond thecapacity of one human being to contain so much densely-packed creative energy". With him wil be two recently-released recordings. "The Gowanus Session" (Porter Records) is a trio album with Thollem, legendary bass player William Parker, and Nels Cline. "Energies are released without falling into the traps of unconditional havoc, always maintaining an indispensable level of sanity..." (Touching Extremes, Italy) The second "You Are Always On Our Minds" (Post-Consumer Records) is a quartet with Thollem (Tsigoti), Mike Watt (Minutemen), John Dieterich (Deerhoof) and Tim Barnes (Silver Jews). About: Veering between the tightly woven and the completely unhinged, trading deep gulfs of ponderous melancholy with gentle, fractured pop fairytales, The Hand To Man Band keeps the listener guessing without ever completely abandoning their own special brand of earthy hall-of-mirrors music. Asked about his ever-diverse music, Thollem observes, "I make music that I hope stimulates the mind and the body, that's intellectual and sexy and meditative and ferocious and poetic and athletic and revolutionary and spiritual and political and loving and that will shake people awake, starting with me first." Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel
~~~ Jeff Crompton/Ben Gettys duo
Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel is Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (steel). Together they create a combination of sounds from two non-fixed-pitch instruments and laptops in an improv environment with a disregard for traditional styles, creating rich textures, swooning collages, and hypnotic pulses.
Jeff Crompton/Ben Gettys duo: Saxophonist/composer Jeff Crompton and bassist Ben Gettys have played together for almost 30 years - in Atlanta's legendary Bazooka Ants, in the Jeff Crompton Quartet, in the 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra, as a duet, and even in blues bands. Jeff is active in the Atlanta avant-garde jazz scene, while Ben is now living in the Columbia area. The Jeff Crompton/Ben Gettys Duo focuses on edgy jazz - challenging, avant-garde, yet accessible. Jeff and Ben will be performing original music and improvisations as well as music by Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, and even a piece by Cecil Taylor. This is a rare opportunity to hear this duet, since these two old friends are now separated by 200 miles.
Jacob Johnson
~~~ Side By Side
Hailing from South Carolina,
Jacob Johnson is a one-of-a-kind solo acoustic performance artist who specializes in a style of guitar playing he calls "Neo-acoustic folk/funk." In live performance, his off-the-cuff sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek sensibility disarm the audience and leave them completely unprepared for the multi-layered guitar masterworks he unleashes.
Side By Side presents music to the masses. They will be presenting acoustic (sans drums) music on this particular occasion.

Killick!
~~~ bigSphinx
Killick! says: My name is Killick. I've been making music for 27 years. I find myself more and more moving deeper into music as a mystical, ritualistic, sacred vehicle for finding stillness. My worldly experience keeps me tethered- thankfully- as I navigate with you the ethereal unknown. There's always three parts to this journey: 1) welcome; 2) spatialization & discontinuity; 3) safe return. This can take many forms, and embodies all possibilities in multiple directions on multiple planes. On this tour is my harp guitar Big Red as the anchor around which all else (r)evolves. I channel equal parts physicality, emotionality, intellect, and spiritual openness, finding calm in freneticism, extracting ecstatic joy from pure potential. I use my intuition to create the conditions for moving beyond the mundane into the realm of healing, to benefit ourselves and all we reach. I have been fortunate to play with my group Pocketful of Claptonite as well as Peter Kowald, Frank Gratkowski, Mary Halvorson, Tatsuya Nakatani, Shaking Ray Levis, Larry Ochs, Liz Allbee, Brann Dailor (of rock gods Mastodon), and many other amazing artists. Of course, this hasn't addressed "what it sounds like" or "what style is it?" The answer is constantly unfolding, but can be summed up as "Yes." Thanks for listening. I look forward to meeting you.
~~~ Meet the Sky
England in 1819In August of 2007, brothers Andrew and Dan Callaway found themselves living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the entire family together for the first time since their childhood spent in the English countryside. Along with their father, Liam Callaway, the trio of musicians began writing songs reflective of their Athens, Georgia roots and their fortuitous return to the South.
Ghosts of the Kodiak hails from Sumter, SC, although over the years the members have spread out across the state. Ghosts of the Kodiak combines honest, confronting lyrics with dynamic, textural melodies, often starting out calm and minimal and crescendoing to powerful climaxes. The band's first release "The Honesty E.P." was released in July 2011 and serves as a teaser for their first full length album which is set to release later in the year.
Ocean vs Daughter is 3 Americans, 1 Brit 1 and Czech who came together in the city of Prague. Their instrumentation include keyboard, cello, synthesizer, violin, drums and ocassionally glockenspiel.
joie. is an indie rock band from Charleston, SC. Lovers of Chipotle and Ron Swanson.
Meet the Sky started late one night when Myra Hendley (vocals, synth), ashley moreira (keys), and ginny wolfe (guitar, synth, drum) simply made up their minds to start making music. with what started out as an idea to play acoustic sets in small venues, their list of covers quickly turned into originals and the girls realized, that together, they yearned to make a much bigger statement and an even bigger sound. in one short year joie. has accomplished much more than they would have ever imagined and are a gaining a fan base in some of the most unexpected places.

Megan Jean and the KFB
~~~ Alex Culbreath
~~~ T.C. Costello
Megan Jean and the KFB Charleston, SC-based duo Megan Jean & the KFB arrange a demented blend of gypsy, circus, americana, and the avant-garde that has been captivating audiences all over America. The pair met in New York City in 2004 and quickly became disillusioned with the music-mill mentality that dominates the concrete jungle. Feeling lost in the shuffle, Jean and Klay decided to sell all their possessions, quit their day jobs, and hit the road full-time, focusing on the Southeast. Fourteen shows turned into 200 a year and a newfound home-base in Charleston's burgeoning music community. While on the road, the pair forged their unique sound, which has been described as "...a wealth of gorgeous tunes that brilliantly [merge] American roots music with exotic elements of Euro/gypsy styles." (T. Ballard Leseman, Charleston City Paper) Calling the road home on a "never-ending tour" with an anchor firmly planted in the Lowcountry, this transient duo has taken DIY lifestyle and transformed it into a kind of Voodoo that unites scenes, fans, bands, clubs and musical styles-all without the help of a label and fueled by sheer guts and know how. In April of 2012, Megan Jean and the KFB will be featured on PBS performing an original composition "These Bones" as part of a music documentary series entitled "Music Voyager," which will be broadcast internationally.
Alex Culbreath is the leader of alt-country/americana band Parlor Soldiers, from Fredicksburg, Va., on solo tour.
T.C. CostelloEqual parts punk rock and world music, T.C. McManus is as likely to play a centuries-old Korean love song as a Dead Kennedys cover. His shows feature many instruments such as guitar, accordion or the Khaen, an ancient bamboo instrument from Laos, where he studied the instrument in 2010. His original songs, based on world music but with punk intensity, are often political, sometimes controversial, but always fun. .. And without exception, his songs go well with beer. ..

The Joy Kills
~~~ Jurassic Heat
~~~ Sons of Young
The Joy KillsWhat exactly are The Joy Kills? Are they are a band, or a way of life? The answer is both. Fusing punk ethos with dirty blues licks, The Joy Kills sound like your favorite band's favorite band. Atlanta's emerging garage rock scene is a fledgling scene at best with potential saviors on every street corner. The Joy Kills are no savior - just compelling reminder that rock n roll is a gritty, kick in the face! Sometimes that's all you need.
Jurassic Heat first crawled out of the primordial soup of nasty jazz and filthy blues in the fall of 2010. Amy Quint's smoky vocals soar over Zach Toman's screaming riffs, nailed to the floor by Steven Van Haren's neanderthalic pounding. Will Royster's four strings keep your hips moving whether you like it or not.
Sons of Young: 4 dudes punk rock sorta songs (think the Clash).

Sinners and Saints
~~~ Just Married
Sinners and Saints is a foot stomping country/blues three piece that has guitar, stand up bass, fiddle, stomp box, and three part harmonies to boot.
The musical style of the band
Just Married
has been described as Americana and 60s Rock with dominant female vocals and strong melodies. Citing influence from John Lennon, The Band, Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, Neil Young, Wilco and Elliott Smith, Just Married music comes across with hints, twists and catches drawn from those greats intertwined with original concepts creating a throwback/vintage sound with new ideas. The band has an authentic Indie sound that brings warm tones, interesting melodies and layers and blends that could only come from the Indie recording environment. Li and Gary write, record (including all instrumentation), engineer and produce all recordings in their recording studio known as "Cabin on a Farm Studios," a self-built recording studio retro-fitted out of a room in their cabin tucked in the back corner of a farm.
Dead Kenny G's
~~~ Hauswerk
~~~ Autolatry
If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio Dead Kenny Gs doesn't say it all upon initial glance, a first listen to their new album Operation Long Leash quickly makes their intentions clear. Saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon are committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk and yet another finds the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; all the while sounding purely DKGs. To further that extent, it's not just music informing the trio's voice, but a keen understanding of political conspiracy in American history. The album's title, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA operation in the late '40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for Western culture to undermine the rigid, confined and conformist ideals of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War.
Hauswerk is an all-housewife punk band.
Autolatry is a black metal band from historic eastern Connecticut. Through music, we tell the tales of New England's history.
FatRat Da Czar
~~~ Western Romantic (ft. Dan from Run Dan Run)
~~~ The Lion in Winter ~~~ Daddy Lion ~~~ Quark Lepton
A seasoned hip-hop veteran, FatRat Da Czar has opened shows for many of the genre's greats including Ludicris, Talib Kweli, Trina, and the late Notorious B.I.G. Crafting Da ColdWar in 2006 with famed DJ Shekeese Tha Beast and returning in 2008 with the classic follow-up Da ColdWar 2: The Day Afta, FatRat singlehandedly distinguished himself by pronouncing his importance to everyone able to hear his music. Currently prepping the third and final installment of Da ColdWar series, FatRat Da Czar is perfecting his craft, practicing his prowess, and coming for MORE!!!
Dan McCurry, the frontman from well-established Charleston indie rockers Run Dan Run, will be making his debut performance as his new solo project, Western Romantic . Run Dan Run was recently named by Paste Magazine as one of the 12 South Carolina bands you should listen to right now. Western Romantic's music is similar to Run Dan Run, but a little more dream pop, employing a drum machine, combo organ, electric guitar, and an army of effects. Don't miss this exciting debut!
The Lion in Winter's variegated indie rock is handsome, graceful and impressive, sweeping and grandiose in scope but rooted in spiraling pop hooks. The band's songs build in refined and stylish crescendos, borrowing from American post-rock, but Hunter Duncan's songwriting voice favors pre-millennial but post-OK Computer Britpop; the combination is both pretty and potent, resulting in incandescent choruses that fade to slow-burn singalongs.
"Columbia's Daddy Lion Daddy Lion has been steadily carving a name for himself in the independent rock world, with his careful composition that takes element of what's generally associated with "shoe-gaze" and mixing reverberated vocals, soft guitar licks, and head-nodding melodies."
Quark Lepton was born in a nuclear winter on the moon, and spends his days writing commercial jingles for frosting eaten by space men. He is inspired by the themes of heartbreak and robots, and by the outdated pop, folk, and country-western music he picks up on his scratchy transistor radio. He is also the secret identity of Steve Nuzum, of Columbia bands Gravitron, JuiceBox, and (formerly) Norwegian Blue, but don't tell anyone.
Glass Vaults
~~~ Pan
~~~ Cancellieri
Glass Vaults are New Zealand natives Richard Larsen and Rowan Pierce. To date, they have released two EP's, both on Fort Lauderdale based Label, Jukboxr. The pairs' songs hypnotically migrate between subtle electronics and pulsating percussion that serves as a rich textural veneer to Larsen's haunting yet sentimental vocals.:
Often compared to Explosions in the Sky,
Pan
is a primarily instrumental band that focuses on writing uplifting music for the masses. Post-Rock is the genre most likely to pigeonhole Pan, but their goals are to transcend genre itself and instead present a concept of immersive musical fulfillment. Post-Post Rock? You may not be far off. We hope you enjoy.
Bedroom pop sensibilities meet expansive cinematic ambitions in this first offering from
Cancellieri
Sunshone Still
~~~ The Seawolf Mutiny
~~~ Elonzo
Sunshone Still is equal parts band and musical nom de plume for Chris Smith, a Nashville native now living in Columbia, SC. Since the 2005 debut release of Dead Letters, Smith was featured on the NPR program, All Songs Considered: Open Mic, and placed songs on the PBS series, Roadtrip Nation. Performing Songwriter listed Dead Letters as an Editor's DIY Pick, and No Depression called it, "impressive" and "a musical landscape painted in the hushed tones of twilight". Since 2009, the band has solidified around the talents of Smith (guitar/vocal), Rodney Lanier and Jason Hausman (multi-instrumentalists), Stowe Barber (drums), and Flavio Mangione (bass).
The Seawolf Mutiny is a four piece Indie rock band based out of Columbia, SC. Drawing from a wide range of influences such as Neil Young, U2, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Mewithoutyou, and the literary works of Flannery O' Conner, The Sea Wolf Mutiny has fused a Indie Folk sound to ecstatic rock. From their first house shows to their CD release of "The Last Season" their sound has been characterized by a tumble and swagger infused with a tenacious and belligerent joy that is as contagious as it is catchy.
Elonzo is a four piece family band who is named after two of the members departed father. They write songs to, for, and about the people and places that have or will mean something to them. The band's sound can sound can transform from stripped alt-country to a richer, more expansive vision that reflects the meaningfulness of the ties that bind us together. Mostly, it sounds like rock and roll.
Dr. Roundhouse
~~~ Stillhouse
~~~ Dead Pedals
Dr. Roundhouse started as an acoustic duo, DNR, that rocked the Columbia music scene. They rocked it hard. Frontmen, Jon and Russell, perfected their original compositions in this early carnation of the band. The duo added Nate Poston to the mix, bringing what is sometimes referred to as the heat. The bass guitar addition led the group to Nick McGill. Despite lacking in the height department, the band felt that he may be the drummer for them. While barely visible to the eye, his presence is more than audible. The group now cobbles shoes and makes custard pies. Also they rock. They rock hard.
Stillhouse is Jenn McCallister, Mike Mahoney, Greg Bates, and Chris Jones. They formed in 2004 and have been playing and writing music around town ever since. Their originals land somewhere between The Band, The Who, and Neil Young. Their covers range from The Beatles, Stones, and Dead to Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, and The Allman Brothers. And they wash it all down with Gin and Vermouth.
If you find solace in the aging tobacco sheds that dot the Carolina countryside, or if you believe flat-bed trailers are better served as stages for Southern Rock Outfits, then you are probably a fan of the Dead Pedals. They have been described as "College Country Rock", or "Southern Dirt Music", but whatever you call them, The Dead Pedals simply write and perform good music. Over two decades of performing in regional bands and touring from Texas to Boston have led to this...a group that has clearly honed its craft. If the devil is in the details, then these boys are straight outta hell. What sets The Dead Pedals apart is that they still allow for the dirt to seep into their music. Like pure spring water flowing from rusty pipes, these guys prove that a well crafted Alt-Country song can still have an edge.
While at Digswell, he co-founded and composed for the group Stinky Winkles (which also included saxophonist Simon Picard), and collaborated with potter Liz Fritsch and visual artist Stephen Cochrane. He also composed and performed music for film, the most notable being his work with Lol Coxhill on director Derek Jarman's Caravaggio (1985). Weston's interest in multi-media presentations led him to earn a degree in performance art from Middlesex University. He also earned a master's degree in music composition from Goldsmith's College University in London. In the '80s and '90s, Weston worked with the Eddie Prevost Quartet and Trevor Watts' Moire Music, and in duos with Minton and Coxhill. Weston has recorded for the Matchless, Acta, Ogun, and Leo labels, among others. In addition to being a prominent free jazz-oriented musician, Weston is also an accomplished mainstream jazz pianist.
Silent Spring Ensemble
~~~ Todd Mathis
~~~ Lindsay Holler ~~~ Jeremiah Akin
Silent Spring Ensemble is an apolitical hardcore chamber trio.
Todd Mathis sez: I like music, I like fun. I like to have conversations about religion and the afterlife but can also have some less complicated discussions concerning beer and baseball. I'm currently the singer/songwriter/guitarist in American Gun. (www.americangun.net) Lately I have been enjoying The Walking Dead and listening to a good bit of Damien Jurardo and Cory Branan.
Lindsay Holler sings and plays guitar. her voice moves onto the sidewalk through a cracked upstairs window on dusky afternoons. it smells you with its tongue, pensively considers, and strikes. In clubs and theatres its the same. On some occasions it caresses; other times accuses. When amplified it can be seen on the air then we all drown.
Jeremiah Akin is a singer/songwriter from Moscow, Idaho whose music is often described as having a gypsy/blues feel. Akin is most commonly recognized for his attention to lyrical content which is mostly metaphorical, sublimely rhymed, conclusively allusive, and always alliterative. The resulting sound is dark, yet delightful.In the past year, Akin has become a published poet and essayist and released his first full-length album, Weeping Prophet and the Bards of Apollo. He is currently working on his second album.
The Post-Timey String Band: Banjos, Guitars, Bass, Kazoos and Singing. Shake and served chilled. Equal parts punk rock and world music, T.C. Costello has been delighting and terrorizing audiences the world over for the past few years. His shows encourage audience participation on nearly every song and feature many instruments such as the accordion, the obscure 1920s marxophone, and the khaen, the national folk instrument of Laos. His repertoire of traditional songs feature everything from a 2,000-year old Korean love song to a rebellious English sea chanty. His original songs, based on world music but with punk intensity, are often humorous, sometimes political, and without exception, his songs go well with beer. Gravitron: Instrumental Surf Stomp Sexcapade. Comparison between Ass/Bastard and Pity Rally: 1) Ass/Bastard is composed of Zach, Conrad, and Joe. Pity Rally is composed of Zach, Conrad, Jordan, and Will. [TIE] 2) Ass/Bastard has a song that features food as a thinly-veiled reference to sex. Pity Rally has more than one song that features food as an overt reference to sex. [Point, PR] 3) Ass/Bastard's lyrics are ironically misogynistic. Pity Rally's lyrics are vaguely feminist and rip off YouTube videos. [TIE] 4) Ass/Bastard features Joe Roberts and sunglasses. Pity Rally does not. [Point, AB] A draw!
Shy Violet is the project of Jordan Romero. Based out of Maryland, Romero has been recording fermented pop music since the age of 15. Writing, recording and playing all the instruments on the songs leaves him with a war between Meek & Spector styled 60's pop music, a collaboration of The Misfits & Madonna in the 80's, and the radio music of the 90's all leaking onto whatever form of recording device he has at the time. While constantly writing and recording, The Shy Violet plans to release two albums this year, along with a tour-only split cassette tape with Recons, who he is touring with this summer.
Reconss is the Savannah based musical outlet for Gus Muller. Recons offers simple, but nuanced pop songs that center around driving drum machine loops. He is one of the "25 innovative percussionists" included in the book Percussion Profiles (SoundWorld, 2001), as well as a founding member of the Splatter Trio and Pink Mountain. His opera, I, Norton, based on the life of Norton I, Emperor of the United States, has been performed throughout North America and Europe.
Since the early 1990s, Thomas Lehn has been performing and producing live-electronic music. Rooted in the experience of a wide spectrum of musical fields based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical-, contemporary and jazz-music and being involved in numerous other projects like music theatre, dance, multi-media, studio pre-/post-production etc., he has been developing an individual 'language' of electronic music.
The current Knives & Daggers lineup includes Jonathan Bass (drums), Lauren Carol Brown (guitar, strings), Jeremy Joachim (bass) and Kevin Stanford (guitar, vocals). Many of the songs are instrumental, often written in "movements," though there are also several songs that feature vocals.
Often compared to Explosions in the Sky, PAN is a primarily instrumental band that focuses on writing uplifting music for the masses. Post-Rock is the genre most likely to pigeonhole Pan, but their goals are to transcend genre itself and instead present a concept of immersive musical fulfillment. Post-Post Rock? You may not be far off. We hope you enjoy.
Dead Surf: Combining catchy pop hooks with intertwining male and female vocal harmonies, these surf-inspired jams are perfect for any spontaneous road-trip to the beach, or equally spontaneous liquor run.
Hammer No More The Fingers: there is no neatly packaged description for Hammer's sound. You could shoehorn them into a 90s indie rock revival thing, but it's a little like putting a squid in a sweater. Perhaps the fact that Joe Hall, Jeff Stickley and Duncan Webster have been playing music together since 1994 conjures nostalgic feelings of a sound developed and perfected over the past two decades. Hammer is a continually developing exploration of the music these guys were born to create.
Those Lavender Whales have fun playing songs and really hope that you have fun listening to them.
The telepathic impulses and guerilla jazz of C. Neil Scott & Matt 'Musician X' Falter come to Conundrum with new CD's available for $5!
Opening will be the magical sounds of artist Lucas Sams' solo project Pray For Triangle Zero with its disarming yet gritty lo-fi charm. And a *NEW ADDITION* to the show: Jeanee Bourque will be doing live painting to the music throughout the evening. Yay! Thank you for joining us, Jeanee.
C. Neil Scott & Matt 'Musician X' Falter comprise a saxophone/drums duo whose influences range from multiple styles of jazz, eastern hemisphere tones and techniques, to dirt floor gospel.
C. Neil Scott is a self-taught alto and tenor saxophonist with two decades well spent performing on city sidewalks, festivals, live improvised scoring of silent films to club and bar dates, ranging from solo to collaborating with 5 or 6 piece ensembles.
Matt 'Musician X' Falter stops short of bringing the kitchen sink in his musical world. With twenty plus years of drumming under the most diverse tutelage, his formal training in African drumming, Chinese arts, and improvisation has honed his skill to a precise and spiritual edge. He has contributed drumming, percussion and conga playing to ensembles, projects, and poetry accompaniment including Borenya West African Drumming and Dance ensemble, Woyate, the Africa Jazz Project, Preach Jacob's Kindablu, and Zuri Wilson's Parallel Worlds Band.
As a duo, they are a formidable force of frenetic guerilla jazz.: feverish guerilla street jazz
Prettier Than Matt: Jessica Skinner and Jeff Pitts are much more than a couple of pretty faces and sharp personalities. They have some kick-ass talent to top it all off. In the two years the duo has been together, they've released a digital single called "Miss You," performed their signature brand of music from South Carolina to Tennessee and opened for established acts like Danielle Howle and Jonas See In Color. When asked how to describe Prettier than Matt's sound, Skinner says, "If Bon Jovi and Alison Kraus had a baby, it would be singing our songs." The sound, she said, is a lively Rock/Folk/Pop blend. Editor's note: "Fock" has been unanimously chosen as the term to go with.
Post Timey String Band: Banjos, Guitars, Bass, Kazoos and Singing. Shake and served chilled
Robes is electronic indie new wave synth from Carrboro, NC
Crown the Cake is a rock band from Columbia, SC
The Last Remaining Pinnacle was started by Dave Allison in Portsmouth Virginia in 1995!!! Inspired by underground noise culture , Late Night TV Movies, random broken amplifiers and 70's reel to reel tape machines Dave A. began recording demo's in the garage at his parents home. Over the next decade Last Remaining Pinnacle collaborated with other like minded artists on numerous recording projects for various labels. In 2009 Chrischa Ives started contributing guitar, keyboards and violin and Last Remaining Pinnacle expanded into a duo. The band also started blending it's noise roots with more structured rock n roll songwriting. In early 2011 the band releases a four cassette collection that contained multiple "Soundtrack" type recordings that had been recorded over the summer and fall of 2010. The band then released a split 7" with fellow Virginia natives Pan Galactic Straw Boss in April of 2011 on Allison's label Custom Made Music. Ives soon left the band and Allison brought in guitarist Dave Dembitsky. The two instantly started writing and recording new material which will be featured on a split 7" with the U.K.'s Cult Of Dom Keller as well as a 5 song E.P. both of which will be released in late Summer/Fall of 2011.
Silent Spring Ensemble: the social fragmentation which is maintained by entities such as facebook, the alienation and emptiness inherent in commodity culture, the will to death, ecological devastation, clear cuts, vivisection, mountain top removal, the bankrupt and insulting nature of what popularly passes for 'political discourse,' industrial capitalism, commodity fetishism, loneliness, advertising, addiction, madness, debt, depression the above things, but more so the following: love, cooperation, friendship, beauty, the miracle that is existence, life, happiness, Plough Jogger, Fred Hampton, Emma Goldman, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mohamed Bouazizi and all else that gives us light when the darkness seems to surround.
Ghosts of the Great Highway is folk music.
Progressive Movie Night: "The most dangerous woman in America". A 30 minute film about Mother Jones, a union organizer in the early 1900's. Mother Jones organized mine workers and we will be joined for discussion by members of the United Mine Workers who are currently organizing in SC. The event is free, beverages are for sale. Celebrating the new Jeb Bishop + Tim Daisy cd "Old Shoulders", on Relay Records 004
Tim Daisy (Percussion/Composition) has been an active member of Chicago's creative music scene since moving there in 1997. He has performed, composed, recorded, and toured with many of the city's celebrated musicians and ensembles. Along with performing percussion duties in internationally acclaimed bands including the Vandermark 5, The Rempis Percussion Quartet, and The Engines, Tim maintains an active composing schedule, writing for his own groups as well as contributing to a number of collaborative ensembles including chamber groups, jazz ensembles, dance, and film.
Tim has had the fortunate experience to perform and/or record with many great improvisers both from the United States and around the world, including: Fred Anderson, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Dave Rempis, Xavier Charles, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Waclaw Zimpel, Mikolaj Trzaska, Steve Swell, Magnus Broo, Jeb Bishop, Erik Friedlander, Havard Wiik, Jim Baker, Michael Zerang, Per-Ake Homlander, Nate McBride and James Falzone.
Trombonist Jeb Bishop is best-known as a member of the Vandermark 5, but was heavily involved in most branches of Chicago's experimental music scene of the '90s, from jazz to free improv to the avant-garde hybrid genre post-rock. Bishop grew up in Raleigh, N.C., and began studying music at Northwestern in 1980, but returned to Raleigh after two years and played bass with hardcore punkers the Stillborn Christians. While studying for a year in Belgium, Bishop became interested in avant-garde jazz, but upon returning to Raleigh in 1985, he found no kindred spirits. Instead, Bishop founded a worldbeat-inflected indie rock outfit called the Angels of Epistemology, which he led from 1986-1989. He moved back to Chicago in 1991 and the following year, he began playing bass for the Flying Luttenbachers, a punk-jazz outfit that included Ken Vandermark. Bishop left in late 1994, joining the Vandermark 5 a year later, which marked the first time he'd played out in a serious jazz context as a trombonist (he also doubled on guitar). As the group's local and national profile grew, Bishop became a popular session trombonist on Chicago's post-rock scene, recording with avant-indie luminaries like Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Gastr del Sol, and the Sea and Cake. 1998 was a banner year for Bishop: he recorded with Peter Brotzmann's Tentet, debuted his trio In Zenith (with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and percussionist Michael Zerang) on the LP Building a Better Future, and issued 98 Duets, which featured Bishop interacting with free improvisers including Mats Gustafsson, Wadada Leo Smith, and Hamid Drake. In 1999, Bishop recorded with the Vandermark 5 rhythm section as the Jeb Bishop Trio, issuing a self-titled album on Okka Disk, and also duetted with Joe McPhee on The Brass City. In 2001, Bishop recorded another album for Okka Disk titled Afternoons.www.conundrum.us
To capture the heart of a winsome campus coed, cerebral milquetoast Ronald (Buster Keaton) vows to become a college jock. Needless to say, his floundering ineptitude leads to the agony of defeat. But when his muscle-bound rival (Harold Goodwin) snatches Ronald's sweetheart, he turns into a world-class athlete as he races to her rescue. An extended track-and-field sequence showcases Keaton's inimitable gymnastic genius.
Br'er became a functional band with the addition of harpist/multi-instrumentalist Darian Scatton in July of 2007, and after several line up changes, now usually contains Benjamin Schurr, Darian Scatton, & Roger Alejandro Martinez.
Leighton Alexander : Lose yourself in beautiful guitar loops fading into and out of each other and hang on every melodious word!
Twisted experimental rock and mutant psych noise from DC and SC
"Oakland's FAUN FABLES aren't really a folk group, but there's no adequate name for the music Dawn and Nils make together, music that is so total, otherworldy, and heretical a vision of traditional music that it can only be compared to THE RESIDENTS' version of rock 'n roll. Frykdahl's instrumental virtuosity is strictly in the service of making every sound you've ever heard unfamiliar. This band has the uncanny ability to blow through original songs, ancient ballads and European avant garde numbers in a set without a single note seeming out of place. Even if you don't like traditional music, avant garde music, or music at all, you still need to hear McCarthy's voice, which will kill you dead." - LA Weekly
WASTED WINE is a ramshackle band of bizarre sounds and baffling lyrics. Based in South Carolina and New York, the band consists of multi-instrumentalists / co-lead vocalists Robert Gowan and Adam Murphy, and fellow musicians Buck Dollars on electric guitar and knives, bassist Lou Buckingham, Jane Kemp on drums. Their music is weird, dark, sad, funny, theatrical, self-recorded, and employing countless "exotic" instruments. Depending on when you catch them, they are a mix of Rock, Eastern European Folk, Klezmer, Cabaret, and more.
THE GOOD WITCH is era elizabeth on vocals, guitar, piano, and/or drum
Peter Evans has been a member of the New York musical community since 2003, when he moved to the city after graduating Oberlin Conservatory with a degree in classical trumpet. Peter currently works in a wide variety of areas, including solo performance, chamber orchestras, free improvised settings, electro-acoustic music, jazz and composition. As a performer, Evans has been working to broaden the expressive range of his chosen instrument and enjoys playing with steady configurations of players and composers. Current bands include the Peter Evans Trio, Quartet and Quintet, Moppa Elliott's terrorist bebop band Mostly Other People Do the Killing, the hyperactive improvisation duo Sparks (with Tom Blancarte), duo with trumpeter Nate Wooley, as well as a sustained interest in solo performance.
Saxophonist and Composer Travis Laplante is highly active in New York City's experimental music scene, and is quickly becoming known as one of the most powerful young voices in improvisational and structured sound. Laplante has recorded and performed with Anthony Braxton, Mark Dresser, Mat Maneri, Jim Black, Trevor Dunn, Andrew Cyrille, as well as the experimental rock bands Extra Life and Skeletons. His band Little Women has toured internationally to high acclaim. Tiny Mix Tapes describes Laplante's music as "a timely battle cry for both the unstoppable force of experimental music and the fact that no mode of domination can ever fully conquer the wild energy and potentiality that blooms inside the body, waiting to explode out into the world and shatter that which must be shattered." The Chicago Tribune simply claims that his music "might change your life, indefinably."
Not so long ago, GARRISON STARR hit the road supporting Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Melissa Etheridge. No surprise, then, that she's learned a thing or two about crafting a great story. Starr regularly pinches a sleight of hand or passing sound bite and turns it into a rich character assessment. Starr's genuine, earthy songwriting approach makes it easy to keep rooting-fists clenched and shaking for more artistic evolution. Her songs seem effortless, absolutely unselfconscious and suggest the next time out she might reach the sky again. "This is really how I feel," Starr sings through on "Spectacle" from her last release, The Girl That Killed September", and I'm gonna scream until it's real."
DANIELLE HOWLE is a woman with a great story to tell: a raconteuse extraordinaire. She weaves her soul into the fabric of her music in a manner that ultimately envelopes and lifts your mind, body, and spirit. Those that have seen her live performances know that they are a genuine offering of her heart: her humorous prattles are filled with insight, inquiry, and wonder, and speak of true romanticism tempered with a healthy dose of cynicism. Her latest release, Swamp Sessions, was recorded deep in the Francis Marion National Forest in a solar powered swamp house on a piece of high ground next to the Echaw Creek. Swamp Sessions is the first solar powered recording in South Carolina, and the first album recorded at Echaw Creek. The presence of the swamp pervades these recordings, and gives them a texture and grittiness that is free from the shackles of modern, over-produced and over-sanitized music.
Based in Charleston, SC, but raised in upstate NY, the guys in A FRAGILE TOMORROW are making a name for themselves all over. They've become known by fans as a high energy power pop band with solid songs and tight harmonies.The musical genre of A Fragile Tomorrow has never been easy to pinpoint, though, as the band uses the cities, musicians, and culture that they come across while on the road as inspiration for their songwriting. Fans have time and again compared their music to the likes of Teenage Fanclub, The Smithereens, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Big Star, The Jayhawks, The Lemonheads, The Posies, and more. Their unique original material has been noticed by many industry legends over the years, including Amy Ray of Indigo Girls and Vicki Peterson of The Bangles, both of whom asked AFT to tour with their respective bands. With 3 studio albums, one acoustic EP, and a live album under their belts, lots of grassroots touring, and a consistently solid stage show, A Fragile Tomorrow is a band that has made a permanent spot for themseles in the music industry.
Plowman will be opening for Nate Hall (of uber-awesome band US Christmas) who will be playing material from his upcoming solo album, "A Great River"
Hailing from South Carolina,
Jacob Johnson
is a one-of-a-kind solo acoustic performance artist who specializes in a style of guitar playing he calls "Neo-acoustic folk/funk." In live performance, his off-the-cuff sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek sensibility disarm the audience and leave them completely unprepared for the multi-layered guitar masterworks he unleashes. Jacob thumps, taps, and slaps his acoustic guitar into submission, weaving a musical tapestry that usually climbs to sonic frenzy whilst never losing its balance or control. His lyrics, thoughtful and realistic, are delivered with the wry sort of charisma that makes you wonder if he isn't just making it all up as he goes. And sometimes he is.
Chris Compton and The Ruby Brunettes play a form of music loosely called Baroque folk-pop; an unassuming strain of emotionally unsettling lounge music for lost souls, lone wolves and the disenchanted, with an emphasis on narrative in the lyrics and ornamentation in the melody. The absence of any rhythm section (no bass or drums) allows for a certain ambient quality in the music that makes it at once unique and difficult to define in terms relevant to rock and roll club owners and dance hall party goers. These are songs for the enlightened but with enough hooks in them to reel in the even Damned and the Dumb. Think Burt Bacharach meets Tom Waits meets Ryan Adams.
DRINKS, DAMES, and DRAWING! Lola La Rouge presents: Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School! Featuring and Welcoming to Columbia: Dixie Dupree Doors open around 7, sketching begins around 8. Alcohol will be FOR SALE for those of age.
Hope For Agoldensummer is a family band from the fine town of Athens, GA. For eons they've traveled the USA creating rusty, angelic melodies with a slide guitar, banjo, jangly percussion, glockenspiel, and a bowed handsaw, all overlaid with the gorgeous sibling-soul-choir harmonies of Claire & Page Campbell.
The Magnetic Flowers come across as a gloriously overstuffed indie rock force of nature, with its band members trading instruments and vocals with abandon as they deliver their highly original, melodically layered, and hyper-literate songcraft. The influence of groups like Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists and The Hold Steady are evident in the band's sound, but are inadequate in capturing the group's exuberant energy and vocal abandon. What is truly amazing about the group, however, is how often they go from careening rock n' roll to subtly layered vocal harmonies or delicate guitar picking, from garage rock fervor to moments of chamber pop bliss. There seem to be no rules or limits to the band's sound, only a willingness to follow each and every song down the proverbial rabbit hole.
Wolter Wierbos is considered one of the world's leading trombone players. He has played throughout Europe, Canada, USA and Asia. Wierbos has many awards to his name, including the Podiumprijs for Jazz and Improvised music and the most important Dutch jazz award, the VPRO Boy Edgar Prize.
His interests range from precise chamber jazz to throbbing post punk and contemporary composed and improvised music. Described as "a phenomenon, both a humorous importer of every style into his template-free, fat-backed sound, and a tireless spy in the house of brass", he is equally at home using the classic trombone vocabulary or enthusiastically giving a round-trip tour of his horn, from buzzing mute mutations and grizzly blurts to purring multiphonics. He is also "a very good instant composer, good at keeping it moving and not taking it too seriously".
Great Architect was formed in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2009, as an improvising group intent on exploring the fringes of all musics with an urgency and focus reflective of the modern condition. Originally a quartet, the lineup expanded to a sextet in early 2010.
Born and raised Lower East Sider Jeffrey Lewis Jeffrey Lewis leads a double-life, as both a comic book writer/artist and a musician (or is that a triple-life?). His band Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard also has a schizophrenic existence, ranging between contemplative folk narratives and distortion-fueled garage rock. Live shows incorporate "low budget videos," Jeff's large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs, such as Jeff's educational multi-part "History of Communism" or flights of fancy like "The Creeping Brain."
And Those Lavender Whales play sweet, poppy indie-folk songs straight out of your backyard.
Forest Tourist began as a collaboration between musicians Edward Burroughs and Marco Frey during the humid summer of 2011 in Charleston, South Carolina. This collaboration began with a mutual fascination with tape recording that eventually manifested itself into their dreamy self-titled debut EP, recorded in Marco's bedroom, now available on Bandcamp. Eventually Forest Tourist adopted close friends Kyle Brown and Trey Cooper and evolved into a four-piece indie act recognized for their refreshingly energetic stage presence fueled by catchy melodies, off-the-grid humor, and drunken lust. Self described as 'Trash Pop', Forest Tourist continues to play shows, and plans to record a follow-up EP this winter.
The WUSC Music Office has put together another kick ass show at Conundrum Music Hall on Friday, March 16.
Dylan & Dayne Lee are just wonderful song writers, a heart meltingly classic folky dueling vocals act. Simply gorgeous and a real rarity to catch in Columbia. They stole our hearts years ago and we are lucky enough to convince them to join the show!
Dear Blanca is Dylan Dickerson's newest project consisting of Evan SImmons from Magnetic Flowers on bass, Marc Coty of Old Canoe on drums, Damien Herring from Horrendous and Eddie Newman from Ape Bastard in the horn section. It is a much more atmospheric experience than Dylan's solo act but boy is it pretty. It's exciting to hear this jubilee of Columbia musical genius in one act.
Paleface is our forever touring band that we at WUSC adore and are pleased to bring back to our city. Paleface composes folk music in earnest, with a bluesy vocal delivery that portrays a feeling of something genuine and well-intentioned.
Cameron Gardner Trio is one of Columbia's music scene's treasures and veterans. Consisting of members of Heist and the Accomplice and more, these guys are brilliant song writers and musicians. They put a whole new edge on bluesy epic rock.
Elvis Depressedly (also known as Coma Cinema) is one of Columbia's coveted acts. A brilliant fuse of bedroom pop and drone. A really amazing act to close up our show!
Quite an interesting bill here, folks. Some heavy indie/psych rock sandwiched in between some true americana. This ought to be good folks!
LE REX: Four wind instruments and a drum - this is Le Rex, the ultimate mixture of groove, harmony and juicy melodies with an unmistakable addiction to the unexpected. Last summer, the band, which has been founded in 2008, retreated to Corsica to literally rehearse in the bushes, record a CD at the beach and busk spontaneously within a fortnight. The music of Le Rex reveals a spectacular kaleidoscope of crispy popgrooves, balkanese horn riffs, intoxicating and frisky rhythm 'n' blues parts and the sweet bitterness of leaden ballads. Even though the five musicians play without any electricity, they definitely are electrifying at all times.
Spawned in 1999, Projexorcism was begun when Ed Cooper acquired two Bell & Howell 2592 auto-shred projectors and 200 educational films. By 2003 Projexorcism had defined a unique flavor of experimental hyperactive expanded cinema & has since been pushing the boundaries of cinematic weirdness. Projexorcism uses a quad 16mm projector array suspended from a light pole - the projectors are controlled with a 4-channel sound-actuated variable speed lighting controller and the projected images are split, inverted and bent using silver reflective CD-R's. In May 2005 the Catawba Council for the Arts awarded Projexorcism an Innovative Project Grant to add a Film-to-Video Regurgitation Array to their quad 16mm setup. Partially unhinged from the linearity of film, the 16mm setup is now augmented with real-time video capture, manipulation & projection devices. The film is manipulated using various techniques to create new contradictory action sequences and dialogue. Films are chosen to reflect relevant, irreverent or nonsensical themes --- black history, presidents, Gila monsters. Film often breaks or passes through the projection gate in a manner inconsistent with film preservation, much to the dismay of Jedi film preservationists. The kinetic swinging and shaking of the film tree will warp reels and melt film - CDs fall to the ground - the shriek of optical sound feedback as dust clogs the sound bulb - the randomly choreographed accidents of brilliance & stupidity - a space armada of keyboards scoring a photonic overture.
Inside Job is a 2010 documentary film about the late-2000s financial crisis directed by Charles H. Ferguson and narrated by Matt Damon. The film is described by Ferguson as being about "the systemic corruption of the United States by the financial services industry and the consequences of that systemic corruption." In five parts, the film explores how changes in the policy environment and banking practices helped create the financial crisis. Inside Job was well received by film critics who praised its pacing, research, and exposition of complex material.
The film was screened at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in May and won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Eye of the Monkey String Band is an old-timey dance band based out of Orlando, Charlottesville, and Nashville. They can be seen in houses, halls, garages, barns, lofts, community centers, truck beds, and backyards throughout the Southeast and Midwest. This five-piece outfit plays music you can't not dance to (really, it is required). They play traditional old-time music, but you will feel the rock. And Roll.
Jubil's Kin is a nationally-touring group based out of Orlando, Florida. They have been touring non-stop after releasing the band's debut Grammy-nominated album in 2010. Through a gambit of tours, the chemistry of the live shows has really become their calling card. Drawn by the honesty of their songs, fans at shows and festivals alike connect to the music. Their real music bares its soul on stage like the brothers and sister they are. Sometimes performing with pedal steel and drums on stage, they most often tour as a simple but full sounding trio. Deftly pairing stark indie folk and old-time flair the band has been labeled "Appalachia-infused Cosmic Americana."
T-Claw grew up in Nashville, TN playing mostly punk and metal. When he moved to the NW he fell into a thriving and vibrant old time music and dance scene. First banjo, then fiddle, then everything else. Calling came pretty intuitively after a couple years of dancing and a decade of organizing. He can be seen getting strangers and beginners to have a time, invoking more per capita joy than any other part of their life. Hold fast and never let go!
Tatsuya Nakatani is a contemporary percussionist, originally from Osaka, Japan. He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.
Thomas Helton enjoys music in all of its guises, be it bebop, heavy metal or avant-garde. Whether swinging with his Birth of the Cool tribute band, or utilizing extended techniques while in dialogue with a temperamental computer, elitism is not a part of Helton's M.O. Like many contemporary musicians these days, Helton is exploring new and creative ways to share and promote his music. His latest project is a DVD created in collaboration with Houston's Binarium Productions, featuring a solo bass performance by Helton filmed in a variety of raw and unfinished spaces. Shot by videographer Jonathan Jindra, who is also a fine electronic musician, Helton's meditative and ritualistic performance is complimented by eerie and imposing environments of pockmarked concrete, exposed air ducts and piles of bricks. Throughout the video, Jindra interjects his own abstract organic visuals complimenting shifts of texture in Helton's music. Nakatani and Helton will each perform solo sets (Helton's will feature projected excerpts from his new video.)
Col. Bruce Hampton has been making music since he formed his first band in 1963. The Colonel has been
in constant motion ever since leaving a trail of memorable live performances with his many bands, including The Late Bronze Age and Col. Bruce Hampton and The
Aquarium Rescue Unit. Along the way he appeared in the movie "Sling Blade" as the poet and band manager Morris and starred in Mike Gordon's cult classic "Outside Out" as a mystical guitar 'out'structor. The Colonel's band features Lawson Feltman, Duane Trucks, and Kevin Scott. Still rolling down the road, Col.
Bruce continues his quest for the tonal center at each exit #6.
Conundrum is a small space with soundproofing panels lining the walls, so no moshing! The show is full.
Steamboat Bill is a silent film masterpiece by the comedic genius Buster Keaton. This performance will feature live musical accompaniment by the ensemble Kenosha Kid. Led by bandleader/guitarist Dan Nettles, Kenosha Kid has been described as "some kind of as yet unlabeled jazz" (All About Jazz), as music "played through an Andy Warhol filter and served up Thomas Pynchon style", (Savannah Now), and as "jazz as if Kenny G and Wynton Marsalis never came along to ruin the genre's mainstream" (Flagpole Magazine).
21 Sounds presents an eclectic evening of new music ranging from contemporary American guitar music to klezmer and Bollywood.
Headlining the concert is L.A.-based ensemble The Helix Collective. The ensemble - comprised of oboist/composer Phil Popham, pianist Meghan Schaut, flutist Sarah Robinson and percussionist Marc Widenhofer - is known for its fresh, exciting performances mixing classical, popular and world music. In a review of the group's 2009 CD All In, the magazine Audiophile Audition praised the group for its "fine musicianship and beyond-the-ordinary programming." Its program, called World Dance Club, will include music ranging from klezmer (in Stephen Dankner's Dance Emigrations) and Bollywood (Mark Weiser's 3 Bollywood Dances) to a four-movement original work by Popham, The Mixer Dances, which features such movements as "The Knight's Ho-Gals" and sounds like early music kicked in the ass by a rock drum set. Also on the program is Finale Enratonado by a young Venezuelan composer and guitarist, Victor Marquez Barrios, who has written for a wide range of instrumentation that often crosses traditional rock-classical boundaries.
Guitarist Steve Sloan kicks off the evening with music by local Columbia composer Brian Bemman, Nashville composer Roger Hudson, and John Doan, a music professor in Oregon known as a master of the rare 20-string harp guitar. Sloan will also perform works by Muriel Anderson, Lawrence Long and Wayne Gratz, along with his own piece, Salvation.
Next up is the acclaimed Russian guitarist Marina Alexandra. Of Alexandra's talent, Classical Guitar Magazine wrote, "She is of the elite class of musicians where technical assuredness is just taken for granted," and Finger Style Guitar called her an "amazing player that commands the guitar with world-class technique and musicianship that is uncommon." Alexandra will perform Andrew York's Sunburst and Nikita Koshkin's Tristan Playing the Lute.
Netherfriends is the never ending touring and recording one man band machine. A rare loop pedal dude who doesn't just get louder and thicker but opts instead to weave elaborate, beautiful pop songs overflowing with hooks and sentimentality. About 4 minutes into his set, when he starts dancing like James Brown, you'll be hooked for life. Netherfriends (AKA Shawn Rosenblatt) recently finished a year long project where he wrote and recorded a song and performed in all 50 states.
Dead Surf: Combining catchy pop hooks with intertwining male and female vocal harmonies, these surf-inspired jams are perfect for any spontaneous road-trip to the beach, or equally spontaneous liquor run.
"Cassangles are a lot like Superman: Drummer Logan Goldstein is faster than a speeding bullet, the basslines are more powerful than a steaming locomotive and Joshua McCormick's spiraling guitarlines are able to leap buildings in a single bound. This is truly instrumental rock of the highest order."
The Uprising of '34 is a startling documentary which tells the story of the General Strike of 1934, a massive but little-known strike by hundreds of thousands of Southern cotton mill workers during the Great Depression. The incredible historical footage shows the aftermath of 6 South Carolina mill workers being gunned down in Honea Path and provides insight into how SC workers became afraid of unions. SCETV refused to air this film when it was first released in 1995, until protests by the SC Progressive Network resulted in a late night broadcast. The free showing will be followed by discussion, and then we'll watch Obama's State of the Union address, live on the big screen.
A new documentary movie (Run time: 60 min) about Gaza thru the photography of Skip Schiel. Between 2004 and 2010 he visited Gaza five times, shortly before and after Operation Cast Lead, the unrelenting Israeli assault on a virtually defenseless people trapped in the Strip and under siege since 2006. Because Israel justifies its ongoing attacks by citing the rockets fired by Gazan militants into Israeli civilian areas (Schiel opposes any attacks on civilians, and generally any use of violence by any party for any reason, an element of his Quaker and Christian beliefs), Schiel visited one of those towns, Sderot. less than 1 mile from Gaza. During two recent trips he has gained first-hand experience of life among Israelis, assessed trauma, and supported Israelis who contest some Israeli policies. Directed by Tom Jackson of Joe Public Films, the 60 minute movie strives to open eyes and hearts to the reality of life in occupied Palestine. We dedicate our movie to the youth of Gaza, infancy to young adulthood, in hopes that they will soon experience,freedom, peace with justice, and the reality of "All we want is to be ordinary," in the words of Mahmoud Darwish. Thollem McDonas "...takes the taut, swirling trills of de Falla and flaming chords of Scriabin and multiplies them into a supercollider centrifuge of innumerable disasters, a churning black caldera bespattered with beautiful madness. It seems beyond the capacity of one human being to contain so much densely-packed creative energy ... putting aside for the moment the perplexing question of how Thollem manages to put out all that donner und blitzen on the keyboard without smashing himself and/or the instrument to bits."
"Thollem's keyboard flights unleash cascades of notes of seemingly impossible velocity and no matter where he goes tonally, it always seems right, fresh and satisfying. As an improviser, he inhabits a world uniquely his own, rhythmically, harmonically and formally. A true original."
This is a workshop that explores group collaboration, large ensemble improvisation (structured, conducted and free), egalitarian group dynamics consensus decision-making, and communication skills. Discussions can include the implications of improvisation, collaboration and active listening from everyday life to global political dynamics. It is open to anyone with these genuine interests regardless of age, language skills, perceived artistic abilities. Participants will leave the workshop with a greater ability to work collaboratively with others and to see their own ideas and projects through to their full realization. This practicum is specifically designed to empower individuals long after it has finished. Utilizing everyday sound sources, found objects and objects that already naturally exist in the space, the workshops also incorporate voices, traditional musical instruments, non-traditional instruments and ambient sounds that are occurring outside of the group and everything possible that we discover as an ensemble throughout the process. Overall, the emphasis is not necessarily on individual creativity but on the ability to listen and collaborate with others. This workshop encourages participation by anyone regardless of their musical experience, age, or language. Most importantly, the workshops develop organically from the input of the participants, a natural progression, a structured improvisation of its own.
Participants will be granted free admission to Thollem's concert that evening, and are also invited to take part in a short set to open the concert.
PAN: "Skinny drums sound like pristine home recordings and, delightfully, with snares that are warm and dissipating instead of ringing and abrupt (something that annoys me about some post-rock bands). Guitars are layered without trickery or complication, and bass is merged within them as a proper frequency placeholder. The whole sound reminds me of Thursday nights in the late 90s - of bands like Slingshot Episode and Hot Water Music, but with some smoother transitional elements (like The Get Up Kids sometimes adopted), that really allow the record to flow and leads to humbly shine."
DOLFISH is the handle of Max Sollisch, a 22 year-old Cleveland-born country songwriter currently residing in Columbus, OH.
He writes sad, bitter, humorous country songs only to bang them out in two minutes or less in balls to the wall garage-rock fashion. It's weird, we know, but it is completely bad ass. Since Dolfish's inception in late 2010, he has shared the stage with Southeast Engine, The Gay Blades, David Dondero, Franz Nicolay, Sore Eros, Joe Pug and Strand of Oaks among others. His debut, Your Love is Bummin' Me Out shreds through 5 tunes in just over 8 minutes and has called "Country Music from 2030." Comparisons range from Daniel Johnston to Robbie Fulks to The Mountain Goats to Guided by Voices, but he's just trying to sound like Neil Young. Watch him closely, or he will come to your house and watch you.
DADDY LION: "A pleasant surprise... hearty, fuzzy guitar-rock, full of introspective and tortured travelogues, breakdowns and reminisces." - NPR
Hailing from Florence, SC, CONCRETE ANIMALS tread the delicate balance between art rock fury and pop sensibility. Despite their short existence, they have made the rounds regionally and garnered praise in local press. Their debut album, Resonator, was recorded in 24 hours at Face of God in late August 2011
MAGNETIC FLOWERS live and work (but mostly live) in Columbia, SC. They enjoy playing literary pop. They just finished their second record, "What We Talk About When We Talk About What We Talk About".
A duo formerly known as Dawn Shredder, CAN'T KIDS is a Southern-Gothic-Depression-Era-Cheerleader-Metal band that formed in a frenzy & a series of ongoing fits of lunacy during November 2010 when members Adam Cullum & Jessica Oliver moved into an extra giant old house with their friend Brielle. All three tenants are now convinced that aforementioned house is indeed haunted.
JEREMY DAVIS is a member of Elonzo, a four piece family band who is named after two of the members departed father. They write songs to, for, and about the people and places that have or will mean something to them. The band's sound can sound can transform from stripped alt-country to a richer, more expansive vision that reflects the meaningfulness of the ties that bind us together. Mostly, it sounds like rock and roll.
Jane Jane Pollock is an experimental-pop quintet. They border hop for slumber party practices in a comfy trailer hidden in the woods of Thomasville, GA. The sound of their music ranges from a haunted carnival to a hyper moldy children's toy marching band. They use pots and pans, bells, mandolin, space echo, Wandering Genie organ, Wurlitzer electric piano, guitars, drum machines, and vocals.
Elvis Depressedly is a solo project by Mat of Coma Cinema.
Silent Spring Ensemble is an apolitical hardcore chamber trio.
Sofia Talvik is the next rising star from the Sweden. She has emerged like a Lady of the Forest, bringing a new interesting side to folk music. Where other artists surrender to the mainstream, Sofia makes her own paths through the musical underbrush of today. Her soft and airy music has been recognized by music lovers and critics all over the world, letting her tour the US several times and making her the first-ever Swedish female singer to play at the Lollapalooza festival. Having released four full-length albums since 2005, Sofia is embarking on an extensive tour in the US, starting in December 2011. Leaving her backing band at home, she is performing instead with video art that brings her stories and the mystical world of Scandinavia to life.
